不定代詞不僅在含義上有單複數之分，而且在用法上有泛指(無the)和特指(有the)之別。指單數時的：指單數時，若泛指用another，若特指用 the other。指複數時的用法：指複數時，若泛指用 other(後接複數名詞)，若特指用the other(後接複數名詞)。
other的用法others永遠表示複數意義(且其後不能再接名詞)。其用法大致相當於)“other+複數名詞”，同樣地 the others 大致相當於“the other＋複數名詞”。another的用法：another一般只能表單數，且其後接名詞也只能接單數名詞。但是若其後有數詞或 few 修飾時，則也可接複數名詞。
