這兩個詞都表示同樣的事物（兩個或多個人、羣體、國家等之間談話、交往、處理事務的方式），它們有些用法是重疊的，但是這兩個詞有不同的隱藏含義。
Relation用在更為正式的書面語中，往往用在國家或大的羣體之間的交往上（伊拉克和美國之間的Relations、黑人和白人之間的Relations）。
Relations會用在diplomatic relations、international relations等這樣的搭配中。
如果將Relations用在具體的人身上，這是一種非常正式的、表示交往的用法。説I am in relations with him是不正確的。在這個例子裏，我們要使用relationship。
Relationship通常更廣泛地用於描述具體人或小羣體之間的交往。如果用於具體的人，Relationship往往表示一種戀愛關係（I am in a relationship with him)，除非文中指明瞭另一種關係類型（her relationship with her coworkers、the parent-child relationship）。
因為Relationship沒有Relations正式，所以在有關國家或大羣體的書面語中，Relationship沒有Relations用得多，但是這種用法，比如the relationship between Iraq and the U.S.，並不罕見，也比較地道。
